Dell Offers Linux — Today!

Posted in General, Linux, Software by site admin on the May 24th, 2007

Dell will begin selling Ubuntu Linux, pre-installed (and with limited support) today.

This is very very good, for several reasons.

Besides the obvious increased visibility for Linux to the consumer market, Dell will have a chance to learn how best to support an open source operating system, something big companies usually shy away from. It’s an inevitable evolution, and I’m glad someone is finally stepping up to the plate.

It might not be fun at the start, as I’m sure they already have their hands full supporting Vista issues, but Ubuntu is currently the most popular Linux Desktop distribution, and has a reputation for very good media and hardware support. Most people say it “just works” out of the box. This is a good choice by Dell to test the waters, and it’s great to see a company actually listen and respond to their consumer demand.

Next up. Let’s get Open Office and Firefox pre-installed on Windows machines.

Oh, and did I mention that Michael Dell actually runs Ubuntu on his personal laptop?

Looking For Work?

Posted in General, PHP, Linux, Software, Python by site admin on the March 16th, 2007

Somehow my phone number seems to have ended up on the job recruiting circuit. Ahh, reminds me of the good old days of 99.

Anyway, I’ll try to repost some of these opportunities as they come to me. No reason any PHP/Python developer should be starving these days.

If you’re interested in working on a high profile site/app, either middle tier (LamP|P|P or Java) , and you’d like to work in Pasadena, let me know and I’ll pass on the job description.

There’s a front end dev position as well.

For those that may be interested, but don’t know me personally or my direct contact info, I’d love to publish it here, but something tells me that’s how my number ended up in the recruiting pool in the first place ;) (no disrespect to recruiters, just surprised to get cold calls on my cell phone)

If you’re interested, I can usually be found on irc, in the #phpc channel on freenode as jonbauer

Ardour, the amazing open source Digial Audio Workstation (Free Pro Tools-ish software for Linux and Mac), is nearing completion of v2.0.

The main financial sponsor, SSL, may have finally realized they were helping to create the monster that would eat them alive, and now have ceased financial support to Paul Davis, Ardour’s project leader.

Help get Ardour to v2!

There are two easy ways to contribute:

1) click on the PayPal donation button on the project home page (as of today, almost $1,000 has been donated)

2) Support the Ardour team and stay fly with a h0t Ardour T-Shirt, in any style you want (Powered by the very very cool Zazzle custom product cart engine)

Ardour 2.0 is coming…..

Fedora 6

Posted in General, PHP, Linux, Software by site admin on the January 11th, 2007

I’ve been using Fedora 6 at work for a couple weeks now. It’s pretty slick, much faster and solid that 5, and the desktop effects rival those of OSX. yes, really.

If you think I’m the only crazy person who uses Fedora as a desktop OS, please note the stats. There are over a million other people as crazy as me.

***PHP related side note, turn Fedora “Desktop Effects” completely off before opening up Zend Studio, or it won’t render the GUI interface. Once it’s open, you can turn effects back on.
